About Us

Ian McKinley Attorney
Ian C. McKinley,  Founding Attorney
The founder of the firm, Ian C. McKinley, is a native of Boulder, Colorado, and the son of an immigrant from Guadalaraja, Mexico, who earned a Ph.D in English as well as a Law degree from Stanford University prior to tragically passing away in a house fire on Ian's second birthday.

When Ian was a sophomore in high school in 1999, he went as an exchange student to live with a family in Puebla, Mexico, in large part in search of his lost Mexican heritage and also to learn Spanish. He ended up falling in love with Mexico’s people, culture and rythmn of life; so much so that after graduating high school, he moved back to Puebla where he began his undergraduate studies at one of Mexico's elite private universities, la Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP).

He earned a football scholarship at the UDLAP playing wide-receiver for the UDLAP Aztecas college football team, and thus completed the first three years of his undergraduate degree in International Affairs there, where a majority of his classes were taught in Spanish. After returning to Boulder to complete his undergraduate degree in International Affairs at the University of Colorado, he returned to Puebla and the UDLAP again to finish playing his final year of football eligibility and to earn a master’s degree in North American Studies in the department of Political Science, during which time he worked with Mexico’s former Secretary of Economy and of Foreign Affairs, Luis Ernesto Derbez Bautista, his master’s thesis advisor.

Ian went on to marry the daughter of the family that hosted him when he was an exchange student in high school, and together they have three children, all three dual citizens of the United States and Mexico.

He knew going into law school that with such life experience, he was uniquely well-equipped to serve the Spanish-speaking immigrant  community living in Colorado and the surrounding Rocky Mountain region. While earning his Law degree at the University of Colorado, Ian's focused on immigration law, and he was awarded the Edward C. King Award in 2013, the only faculty-voted award for outstanding leadership and achievement.

Upon passing the Colorado bar exam in 2013, Ian founded the McKinley Law Group, L.L.C. He takes great pride in being able to provide exceptional legal service in the areas of immigration law,  family law, criminal, and civil law, to predominantly Spanish-speaking clients. The firm has rapidly grown to 3 attorneys and 7 legal assistants, and it has achieved such exceptional results that it can rightly call itself among the elite immigration law firms in Colorado and surrounding the Rocky Mountian region.
